FAQ

Q: Why is the built unit a good deal?
A: The built unit is professionally assembled and includes over $1,000 in new parts to complete the unit. Some of the new parts are difficult to source. This is a great savings over the build-it-yourself gear and case kit especially if you do not have the time or a donor NP205 for the remaining parts.

Q: Does the built unit use any used parts?
A: No, the built unit uses all new parts.

Q: Is anything else needed to complete the built unit?
A: The built unit is shipped dry. You will need to add the proper gear oil to the built unit when you receive it before use.

Q: What is needed to complete the build-it-yourself gear and case kit?
A: The build-it-yourself gear and case kit will need a donor NP205 for the remaining parts. We highly recommend an NP205 Master Rebuild Kit as well if you choose this route.

Q: How many hours will it take me to complete the build-it-yourself gear and case kit?
A: There are many variables that affect the answer and everyone's mechanical skills are different. The build-it-yourself gear and case kit should take the same time as required to build a stock NP205 since the build steps are basically identical. The intermediate gear assembly is a bit easier to install on the Lomax case due to the presence of a bottom inspection cover. Typically, the build time would be between 3 and 6 hours depending on equipment, facilities, and personal experience.

Q: Do you include instructions with the build-it-yourself gear and case kit?
A: See the LoMax 205 instructions (PDF) which is listed on our Installation Guides page.

Q: Can I buy all of the remaining parts from JBC to complete the build-it-yourself gear and case kit?
A: While we have most of the parts, we do not sell all of the parts necessary ... yet. Some parts are difficult to source and we reserve those for complete units. We are working on sourcing and this could change in the future. If you do not have a donor NP205, the better option is the built unit.

JB Conversions LoMax 205

LoMax 205 Bolt Patterns

The LoMax 205 transfer case truly stands in a class by itself. The original New Process 205 has always been recognized as The King of brute strength in transfer cases. The LoMax 205 retains all of the benefits from the original NP205 and goes several steps further. The LoMax case is a nodular iron casting machined to exact tolerances taken from the original New Process drawings. Aside from the stronger nodular iron recipe, the LoMax case offers more internal ribbing and wall thickness than the original NP205.

The 3:1 gear set offered in the LoMax transfer case is stronger than the original New Process gears. The tooth width is wider than stock yet the overall case dimensions are equal to stock New Process design. This means there are no modifications required to your truck. Driveshafts, shifters, etc. are retained in their original form.

Is 3:1 enough?

Is 3:1 enough?

Consider going from 3.72 to 5.58 AXLE GEARS. This is the same percentage of gear reduction you are getting with the LoMax transfer case gears.

The chosen ratio of 3:1 was dictated by customer demand. Consideration was given to a 4:1 case however our customers were concerned over loosing too much wheel speed at the sacrifice of gear ratio. For this reason, 3:1 has proven to be the best ratio for all-around performance in the big truck class.

Each LoMax 205 is assembled with the following upgrades:

  • 32 Spline rear output shaft with "bolt-on" 1350 yoke.
  • 32 Spline front output shaft with 1350 yoke.
  • LoMax gears with 3:1 low range reduction ratio.
  • LoMax nodular iron case with optional mounting patterns.
  • New bearings, seals, and small parts.

Options are availble for:

  • 1410 yokes
